The Flying Grandpas - Germany5The Flying Grandpas are a group of 13 police officers from Hamburg, Germany. They specialise in sports, artistry and humour, and have been delighting audiences at home and abroad for more than 50 years. They truly are an entertaining spectacle to behold.

THE IDEA
In the beginning there was a motivation problem. In 1964, when sport in Germany was more physical fitness and accordingly "popular", the police offspring should still be encouraged for fun - lets say: coordinated movement sequences are stimulated. Not an easy undertaking at a time when an iron ball with a ribbon, a medicine ball and the notorious gymnastic box were virtually the only sports equipment that was more likely to hurt oneself than to train oneself.

Murley Silver Band10Murley Silver Band was formed in 1924 and took its name from the local district of Murley, a few miles from Fivemiletown, Co. Tyrone (Northern Ireland) where most of the original members resided. At present the band is located in Fivemiletown, in the heart of the Clogher Valley. The late Gordon Bloomfield conducted the band from 1960 until the appointment of a local school head teacher, Jack Taylor, in 1962.

However, it is fair to say that the meteoric rise of the Murley band through the sections can be pinned on one man - the late Harry Gault . Harry (who also founded the magnificent Strabane Concert Brass) was the conductor of Murley for 24 years, until his untimely death on April 12th 1997 at a brass band contest.
